The World Health Organization describes burnout as the result of chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It has three features:
- Exhaustion: feeling drained, with no reserves left.
- Mental distance from your work, often felt as cynicism or detachment.
- A drop in your sense of effectiveness, feeling that nothing you do makes a difference.
Burnout is classified as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition, but its effects on health are real, and people also use the word for exhaustion from caregiving and other demanding roles.
