How Long Does Postpartum Depression Last?

Postpartum depression often lasts several months, and without treatment it can continue well past a baby's first year. With treatment, many parents start to feel better within weeks to a few months. It is different from the baby blues, which usually fade within about two weeks of birth. If low mood lasts longer than that, or is severe at any point, it is worth getting help.

Baby blues or postpartum depression?

The baby blues are very common in the first days after birth: tearfulness, mood swings and feeling overwhelmed, usually easing within about two weeks. Postpartum depression is more intense and lasts longer. It can start during pregnancy or at any point in the first year after birth, not only in the first weeks. Our article on postpartum anxiety and the baby blues covers the anxiety side in more detail.

Signs of postpartum depression

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness or hopelessness.
  • Losing interest in things, including the baby.
  • Feeling numb or disconnected from your baby.
  • Intense guilt, or feeling like a bad parent.
  • Changes in appetite, and sleep problems beyond what a newborn causes, such as being unable to sleep when the baby sleeps.
  • Anxiety, irritability or anger.
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
  • Thoughts of harming yourself, or that your family would be better off without you.

What affects how long it lasts

  • Getting help early. Earlier treatment is generally linked to faster recovery.
  • Support at home. Practical help with night feeds and household tasks makes a real difference.
  • Sleep. Protecting some longer stretches of sleep supports recovery.
  • History. A previous episode of depression, anxiety or postpartum depression can raise the risk of a longer course, so tell your care providers about it.
  • Stress. Financial pressure, relationship strain, a difficult birth or a baby with health needs can all add weight.

Treatment works

Therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy and interpersonal therapy, is effective for postpartum depression. Some parents also benefit from medication, and there are options compatible with breastfeeding that your doctor can discuss with you. Many people use both.

Partners can be affected too

Postpartum depression is not limited to birthing parents. Partners, including fathers, can also experience depression in the year after a baby arrives, and it often goes unnoticed. If you are the partner and you are struggling, that deserves attention too.

When it is urgent

Postpartum psychosis is rare but serious. Signs include confusion, hallucinations, paranoia or thoughts that do not make sense, and it usually begins within the first weeks after birth. It is a medical emergency: call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, call or text 988, or call 911. Health Link at 811 can also give advice at any time.

Asking for help is part of caring for your baby

Many parents hold off because they feel they should be coping, or worry about what admitting it will mean. Postpartum depression is a health condition, not a reflection of how much you love your child, and getting better is one of the most useful things you can do for your family.
