What to Expect From EMDR Therapy

Individuals experience trauma differently; sometimes, we are able to deal with these traumatic events and move forward in positive and healthy ways, but other times, trauma rears its ugly head, and the effects can be residual and far-reaching. Trauma, especially when it has not been dealt with appropriately, can hinder and impede our ability to adequately integrate certain experiences into our mental capacity, and challenging symptoms may arise as a result. In order to help manage these symptoms, EMDR therapy uses an 8-phase approach to help diminish or eliminate distress from traumatic memories or other triggers. During an EMDR therapy session, a psychologist will gently guide you through the reprocessing journey, teaching coping strategies and ensuring you remain in control at all times. Several of our psychologists have completed advanced EMDR training to provide specialized support and help you regain emotional balance.

With guidance and support, healing is not only possible—it’s within reach.

What EMDR therapy costs

EMDR sessions are a standard 50 minutes and cost $235. Most extended health plans cover EMDR as psychological services when the clinician's designation is eligible. EMDR is currently offered by registered provisional psychologists, so check that your plan covers that designation.

At Supporting Wellness, we are proud to offer secure video and online counselling. Whether you lack mobility, live in a remote area, or simply prefer the convenience of meeting from home, we can connect with you online. And with Alberta’s ever-changing weather, we can easily adapt in-person sessions to virtual when needed. If you are interested in video counselling, please contact us.

The number of sessions we recommend is unique to each person. During your initial consultation, we can suggest a starting plan, and we will work collaboratively with you throughout the process, adjusting as needed to support your goals and achieve the best possible outcomes.

A 50-minute session is $235 with a psychologist and $220 with a Canadian Certified Counsellor. Fees are the same at our Calgary, Red Deer and Cold Lake clinics, and couples sessions cost the same as a regular 50-minute session. Some clinicians charge less or offer a sliding scale, so call us to talk about your needs and we will help you find someone who fits your goals and budget. Assessments are priced separately because they involve more than one session, so contact us for a quote. You can also view the recommended fee schedule set by the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta.

For your convenience, we accept credit card, debit, e-transfer, and cash payments.

We offer direct billing to many insurance providers, including Alberta Blue Cross, Greenshield, Medavie Blue Cross, NIHB, Sun Life, Telus Health, Canada Life, Desjardins, Manulife, Chambers of Commerce, Equitable Life, Johnston Group, Maximum Benefit, Group Source, Simply Benefits, and Industrial Alliance.

If direct billing is not available for your specific plan, you can always pay for your session and submit the receipt to your insurance provider for reimbursement. If you have questions about your coverage, please give us a call and we can help determine which therapists are covered under your individual insurance plan.

When you book an appointment, that time is reserved just for you. If you are unable to attend, we kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice so we can offer the time to someone else. Missed appointments or late cancellations will be charged a fee of up to $200.
