Military and Veteran Mental Health Support in Alberta

Serving members and veterans tend to arrive at counselling later than almost any other group, and usually for a specific reason: the culture rewards carrying on, and asking for help can feel like admitting you cannot.

That reads differently from inside the institution than it does from outside it, and any clinician who does not understand that will spend the first several sessions missing the point.

What tends to bring people in

Rarely a single incident, and rarely straight after it. More often it is an accumulation, surfacing months or years later, frequently at a transition point. Posting out. Release. A relationship reaching breaking point. A child reaching the age you were when something happened.

The presenting complaint is often sleep, anger, or drinking, rather than anything named as trauma.

Operational stress injury is a broader category than PTSD

Operational stress injury covers any persistent psychological difficulty resulting from operational duties. PTSD sits inside it, but so do depression, anxiety, and substance use that developed in service.

The wider term matters because a lot of people rule themselves out of help on the grounds that what happened to them was not dramatic enough to count. Chronic exposure, long deployments, and cumulative strain produce genuine injury without a single identifiable event.

Moral injury

This one is under-discussed and it lands hard when someone finally has language for it.

Moral injury is the damage done by having participated in, witnessed, or failed to prevent something that violated your own moral code. It is distinct from fear-based trauma. Where PTSD tends to produce hypervigilance and intrusive re-experiencing, moral injury produces guilt, shame, and a loss of trust in yourself or in the institution.

It does not respond well to being treated purely as a fear response, which is one reason people who have had trauma therapy that focused only on threat sometimes report it did not touch the real thing.

Families carry it too

Spouses manage repeated relocations, single-handed parenting through deployments, and the constant low-level planning around a partner's absence. Children move schools repeatedly. Partners often notice changes in a returning member long before the member does, and get told they are imagining it.

Family members are eligible for support in their own right, not merely as an adjunct to the member's treatment. Family counselling is frequently more useful than individual work alone.

What is available

The VAC Assistance Service is free, confidential, and staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, at 1-800-268-7708. It is open to veterans, former RCMP members, their families and caregivers, and you do not need to be receiving any other VAC service to use it. TDD/TTY is 1-800-567-5803.

Veterans Affairs Canada also funds mental health treatment for eligible conditions, which for many veterans means counselling at no direct cost. It is worth checking entitlement before assuming you will be paying out of pocket.

Serving members have access to CAF health services and to the Member Assistance Program.

The confidentiality question

This is the single most common reason serving members do not seek help, and it deserves a direct answer rather than reassurance.

Seeing a civilian psychologist in private practice means your records are held by that practice under provincial privacy legislation, not by the chain of command. Limits to confidentiality exist and are the standard clinical ones, primarily risk of serious harm to yourself or someone else, and duties to report regarding children.

If this is your concern, raise it explicitly in the first session and ask exactly how records are held. A good clinician will answer plainly.
