How Much Does EMDR Therapy Cost in Calgary?

At Supporting Wellness, EMDR therapy costs $235 for a standard 50-minute session. It is billed like any other therapy session, and most extended health plans cover it as psychological services when the clinician's designation is eligible, because insurers pay for the clinician, not the technique.

What you pay per session

Our EMDR sessions are the standard 50 minutes, and the fee is the same at our Calgary and Cold Lake clinics. Across Calgary, fees vary mostly with the clinician's designation and the length of the session.

Session length is worth comparing. Some clinicians elsewhere book longer sessions for the reprocessing phase, and longer sessions cost more. Ask how long the sessions are when you compare prices.

How many sessions EMDR takes

EMDR follows eight phases, and the first sessions are history-taking and preparation rather than reprocessing. After that, it depends on what you are working on. A single event in adulthood, such as a collision, often takes fewer sessions. Repeated or childhood trauma usually takes longer.

As a rough guide to the arithmetic, six sessions come to $1,410 before insurance, and twelve come to $2,820. Your clinician can give you a realistic estimate after the first session or two. Our article on your first EMDR session explains the early phases.

Does insurance cover EMDR?

Usually, in part. A plan that pays 80 percent up to $1,000 a year would cover $188 of a $235 session, leaving you $47, until the $1,000 runs out after about five sessions. Your own plan will differ, so check three things:

  • The annual maximum for psychological services.
  • The percentage covered per session.
  • Which designations are eligible: registered psychologists only, or also provisional psychologists, social workers and counsellors.

The third point matters. At Supporting Wellness, EMDR is currently offered by registered provisional psychologists, so check that your plan covers that designation. Tell us which plan you have and we can check for you.

Other ways to lower the cost

  • A spouse's plan can often pay part of what yours does not.
  • Health spending accounts can generally be used for psychological services.
  • The medical expense tax credit applies to psychologists' fees you pay yourself.
  • NIHB, Veterans Affairs Canada, WCB and auto insurance after a collision can fund trauma therapy for people who are eligible.

Do you need a referral?

No. You can book EMDR privately without a referral. Some insurance plans ask for a doctor's referral before they reimburse, so check yours before the first session.

What to ask before you book

  • What EMDR training have you completed?
  • How long is each session, and what is the fee?
  • Can you bill my insurer directly?
  • Roughly how many sessions before reprocessing starts?
