Gillian Goheen-Smith, Canadian Certified Counsellor
Gillian brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to her counselling practice, with 20 years of experience working within and around the school system. As a former teacher in both traditional and alternative classrooms, she has worked extensively with neurodiverse learners and children impacted by complex trauma, including those navigating the challenges of growing up in families affected by addictions. Gillian is passionate about guiding individuals through all stages of development from childhood to adulthood, using a strengths-based lens that helps them understand their own brains.
Gillian holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Saskatchewan, specializing in middle years math and science, and completed her Master of Counselling Psychology through Athabasca University. Her transition from educator to counsellor reflects a natural progression in her lifelong commitment to supporting youth and families.
Her work is informed by both professional and personal experience. Having spent years navigating complex systems from within schools and as a parent and advocate, Gillian offers clients not only clinical skill but also practical insight into the challenges families often face when seeking support. She has completed further training in digital literacy and online exploitation, enhanced emergency sexual assault services, and domestic violence and family systems.
Gillian is a proud mother of two teenagers transitioning to adulthood and understands the emotional and developmental shifts that come with parenting. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys chasing the sunshine, and adventures with her family. A lifelong animal lover, she values the sense of calm and connection that comes from time spent with them. The horses and dogs she cared for over the years have taught her the importance of patience and simple connection.
